Blaabjerg Plantation

Midst the beautiful Blaabjerg Plantation lays the highest dune in Denmark of 64 meter, which used to be a seamark for the local fishermen. From a distance the dune seems to be blue – hence the name, which means “blue mountain” in Danish.

The plantation is a lovely place to start a picnic. In the 4600 m² big plantation you will find marked routes, so everyone can enjoy the wood – hikers, cyclists and horseback riders.

The parking area at Blaabjerg is further the starting point for 2 mountain bike routes, a green route of about 4 km length and a black route of about 7 km length and with some technical challenges – for instance the Rævebakken, which can take your breath away.

The plantation is 15 km long, and you will have the best view from the top of the dune, from where you can see dunes, the sea and the wood – and not less than 40 church towers.

The plantation was set up in the second half of 1800 on request of the dune inspector Thyge de Thygeson, whose memorial stone of granite from the island of Bornholm is placed on top of the dune. At that time the travel of sand endangered to bury the houses in the area. The oaks were all buried and the bushes you can see today in the area are all tree tops, which have willfully made their way through the sand.
